Well, this was a bit of a let down. After seeing the trailer and a few clips of Moulin Rouge, I thought this movie was going to be my favorite musical movie. First of all the whole film was too chaotic. I am not really fond of fast cutting movies (like many Guy Ritchie movies), I'd rather watch long takes. The story of The Mouling Rouge wasn't that special either. Of course there was a 'suprise' near the ending, but the main character spoiled this in the very first scene.
What I did like were the visuals and the costumes! I think Moulin Rouge would have been better if I saw it in theatre. A small screen is not advantageous for this movie. I also liked the performances. Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman and John Lequizamo (He sounds exactly like he does in Ice Age) were great, but I think Jim Broadbent had the best performance. Why didn't he receive an Oscar nomination for Moulin Rouge? Well, apparently he did receive a nomination for another movie that same year and won.
So to conclude, I thought this was a visually stunning movie with wonderful performances, but a great story and quite scenes were absent.
Singing in the Rain remains my favorite musical movie.

The best Holland has to offer
Posted : 11 years, 5 months ago on 2 June 2013 09:39 (A review of Character)2 June
Almost a year ago, when I joined Listal, the only great Dutch films I had seen were 'Black Book' and 'Soldier of Orange'. I thought these two films were the only good ones. I was terribly wrong: 'Simon', 'The Marathon', 'Daglicht' and now 'Character'.
+ Wonderful costumes and set designs
+ Victor Löw's role
+ I loved the story of this film
+ Great acting performances
- A little slow at some points
Now I need to see Paul Verhoeven's 'Turkish Delight' really soon. It is supposed to be the best Dutch film ever made.

Only 'Decent' People
Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 18 October 2012 10:38 (A review of Alleen maar nette mensen (2012))Only Decent People, a film about mixed cultures, wasn't really a 'decent' film. The film focuses on a guy, David, who lives in a really rich neighbourhood. But he has one problem: He likes big black ghetto queens. Like almost every Dutch film, nudity was well represented in Only Decent People. This is why these films often have a lack of quality.
It was interesting to see two very different cultures collide in a hilarious way. This could have been a great story, but the script was awful! Unrealistic, poor choice of words and too much focus on sex scenes. The actors did a really good job though. Specially Jeroen Krabbé (Soldier of Orange, The Figitive) had an interesting part.
Verdict: Humor: present.. quality: missing
2.5*
